PINE BLUFF, AR - Stephanie Okowi collected 11 rebounds and Kristyna Boyd added 7 more, but the UAPB women's basketball team fell to the Grambling Tigers 64-57 at home Thursday.
The Golden Lions (2-14, 0-6) had two players score in double figures, led by D'Arrah Allen, who had 19 points and three steals. Okowi added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Empress Roberts added eight points and two steals.
Led by Okowi's four offensive rebounds, UAPB did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in four second chance points.
UAPB's defense held Grambling to only 33.3 percent shooting from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-7, UAPB went on a 5-0 run with 1:51 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Roberts, to take a 12-10 lead. Grambling then responded to tie things up at 15-15 heading into the second quarter. UAPB relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
UAPB then started off the second quarter by going on a 5-0 run to take a 20-15 lead. The Tigers then came roaring back to take a 33-31 lead heading into halftime.
Grambling continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 46-36 advantage before UAPB went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Okowi, to trim its deficit to 46-41 with 2:19 to go in the third. Grambling countered and stretched its lead to 53-46 heading into the fourth. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
UAPB could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 64-57. UAPB took advantage of eight Grambling turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.
