PINE BLUFF, AR - The UAPB women's basketball team got a 13-point performance from the bench, but fell 52-36 to the Southern Jaguars at home Saturday.
D'Arrah Allen led the Golden Lions with 12 points and three steals. Stephanie Okowi added four points, seven rebounds and two blocks off of the bench and Kristyna Boyd chipped in as well with five points and two steals.
UAPB's defense held Southern to only 34.8 percent shooting from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 4-1, UAPB went on a 7-0 run with 4:41 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Okowi, to take an 8-4 lead. The Golden Lions then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 9-8.
The Golden Lions continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 26-16 halftime deficit.
Southern continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 35-17 advantage before UAPB went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 35-22 with 27 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. UAPB took advantage of 11 Southern turnovers in the quarter, scoring two points off of takeaways.
UAPB could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 52-36. UAPB got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 14 total points.
