MONTGOMERY, AL - D'Arrah Allen, Empress Roberts and Kristyna Boyd combined to score 36 of UAPB's 46 total points, but the Golden Lions fell to the Alabama State Hornets 58-46 on the road Thursday.
The Golden Lions had two players score in double figures, led by Allen, who had 16 points and two steals. Roberts added 11 points and two steals and Boyd added nine points and eight rebounds.
Led by Briontanay Marshall's five offensive rebounds, UAPB did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 17 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.
The UAPB defense caused its share of mistakes in Thursday's game, forcing 18 Alabama State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 11 points on the other end of the floor. Roberts' two steals led the way individually for the Golden Lions.
How It Happened
After falling behind 16-7, UAPB went on a 5-0 run with 2:22 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Allen, to narrow its deficit to 16-12, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
Alabama State kept adding to that lead, building an 18-12 advantage before UAPB went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by a three from Allen, to take a 22-18 lead. The Hornets then came roaring back to take a 26-25 lead heading into halftime.
UAPB's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Golden Lions faced a 43-34 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. UAPB took advantage of six Alabama State turnovers in the quarter, scoring three points off of takeaways.
