PINE BLUFF, AR -- The UAPB women's basketball team got a 32-point showing from the bench, but fell 66-57 to the Prairie View A&M Panthers at home Saturday.
The Golden Lions (14-13, 9-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Maya Peat, who had 14 points and seven rebounds. Coriah Beck tacked on 12 points, four assists and three steals and Kourtney Rittenberry chipped in as well with 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals off the bench.
UAPB out-rebounded Prairie View A&M 33-31 in Saturday's game, led by Peat's seven boards. The Golden Lions also grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and scored nine second chance points.
The UAPB defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 20 Prairie View A&M turnovers while committing 16. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Kaila Walker led the way individually for the Golden Lions with three steals.
How It Happened
UAPB entered the second quarter tied at 13-13 after a tightly contested first period. UAPB capitalized on seven Prairie View A&M turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.
The Panthers then took control in the second quarter and the Golden Lions entered haltime behind 32-24.
After intermission, UAPB cut its deficit to 42-35 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Rittenberry, to trim its deficit to 42-40 with 1:34 to go in the third. The Golden Lions were unable to cut further into the deficit, but did not cede ground to Prairie View A&M either and entered the fourth quarter trailing 46-44. UAPB took advantage of seven Prairie View A&M turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of takeaways.
Prairie View A&M kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 49-44 advantage before UAPB went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Rittenberry's layup, to even the score at 49 all with 7:54 to go in the contest. The Golden Lions could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Panthers outscored them 17-8 the rest of the way to hand UAPB the 66-57 loss. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 13 points in the paint.
