#UAPBWomensHoops: UAPB Falls Short to UTEP 70-62

EL PASO, TX -The UAPB women's basketball team kept UTEP to just 18.8 percent from deep in a 3-for-16 shooting performance, but fell 70-62 to the Miners on the road Thursday.

The Golden Lions had two players score in double figures, led by D'Arrah Allen, who had 26 points. Kristyna Boyd tacked on 10 points and eight rebounds and Nadiyah Byard added two points, 12 rebounds and two steals.

Boyd pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UAPB, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.

UAPB's defense held UTEP to only 18.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Miners did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with six offensive rebounds and managed four second chance points while UAPB cleared 26 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After falling behind 5-4, UAPB went on a 9-0 run with 8:16 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Empress Roberts, to take a 13-5 lead. The Golden Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-17 advantage. UAPB capitalized on five UTEP turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.

UAPB kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 4:47 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Uriah Jennings, to increase its lead to 33-26. The Miners then came roaring back to take a 35-33 lead heading into halftime.

UTEP continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 41-38 advantage before UAPB went on a 6-0 run to grab a 44-41 lead with 3:05 to go in the third. UTEP responded to seize a 49-47 lead entering the fourth quarter. UAPB scored three fast break points in the quarter.

UAPB came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Allen's three, to seize a 52-49 lead with 8:46 to go in the contest. UTEP re-asserted control, outscoring the Golden Lions 21-10 the rest of the way to hand UAPB the 70-62 loss. UAPB fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 15 points.
