PINE BLUFF, AR -- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team scored 31 points off of turnovers on the way to a 71-39 win over the at home Wednesday.
The Golden Lions (2-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Jazmyn Sostand, who had 14 points and six rebounds. Empress Roberts tacked on 10 points and five steals from the bench and Janiyah Tucker chipped in as well with 10 points and four steals.
Nadiyah Byard pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UAPB, grabbing 23 boards and turning them into 16 second chance points.
UAPB's defense held to only 32.6 percent shooting from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 2-0, UAPB went on a 7-0 run with 7:16 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Tucker, to take a 7-2 lead. The Golden Lions then added five points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with an 18-8 advantage. UAPB did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 18 points close to the basket.
UAPB kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 8:49 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Kristyna Boyd, to increase its lead to 26-8. The Golden Lions proceeded to tack on six points to that lead and enjoyed a 38-14 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 20 points close to the basket.
UAPB continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run to expand its lead further to 46-20 with 3:23 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Golden Lions still entered the fourth quarter with a 46-28 edge. UAPB took advantage of six turnovers in the quarter, scoring two points off of takeaways.
UAPB kept widening that lead, expanding it to 59-39 before going on a 12-0 run, finished off by Ashley Rojas' layup, to grow the lead to 71-39 with 37 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 25 points in the paint.
