HUNTSVILLE, TX -- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team held Sam Houston to just 39.1 percent shooting from the field, but fell 67-48 to the Bearkats on the road Saturday.
The Golden Lions (2-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Janiyah Tucker, who had 16 points and nine rebounds. Jailah Pelly added 10 points, two steals and two blocks and Ashley Rojas added four points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Led by Rojas' three offensive rebounds, UAPB did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 11 second chance points.
The UAPB defense held Sam Houston shooters to just 39.1 percent from the field, including 0 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
UAPB struggled out of the gate, falling behind 22-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Golden Lions continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 37-17 halftime deficit.
Sam Houston continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 46-22 advantage before UAPB went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 46-27 with 2:07 to go in the third. The Golden Lions continued to reduce the Sam Houston lead, shrinking it to 49-32 by the end of the third quarter. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.
Sam Houston kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 63-40 advantage before UAPB went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Kristyna Boyd's layup, to shrink the deficit to 63-46 with 2:00 to go in the contest. Sam Houston responded and outscored the Golden Lions the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 67-48. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 16 points in the paint.
