The University of Arkansas Pine Bluff soccer team kicked off their season opener dropping their non-conference match 3-0 against the University of Little Rock Trojans Thursday evening at Pumphrey Soccer Complex. With six freshmen in the lineup the Lady Lions played a very intensive game on both offense and defense side of the ball.
With the game scoreless halfway through the first half the Trojans scored their first goal of the half at 20min mark to take a 1-0 lead before intermission.
In the second half the Trojans increase their lead scoring two goals down the stretch in the 54th and 72nd minute to escape for their first road win of the season.
The Lady Lions were led by freshman Natalie Freeman who led the team with two shots attempts in her college debute. Freshman goalkeeper Kailey Wehrmann made her debut leading the team with 11 saves.
"I feel really good after today's game, even though we lost and came to the field expecting to win but giving the team that we competed against it was expected" said head coach Eric Solberg. "Three - zero on the scoreboard I think is fair but we learned a lot about our team, the character, the effort, and the energy was really good."
The Lady Lions will be back in action for their second non-conference game at home on Sunday, August 22nd against Oral Roberts at 1 p.m. at Pumphrey Stadium. The game will be open to the public and masks mandated for all spectators present.
