The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team had an explosive first series game against Jackson State out playing the Lady Tigers 10-2 in sixth innings to clinch game one in conference play at the Torii Hunter Softball Complex.
The Lady Lions wasted no time to strike first in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Felicia Drake blasted a solo home run to left field to give UAPB a (1-0) lead.
The Lady Lions kept the rally going, jumping out to a 4-0 lead, before freshman Samaria Jackson hit a towering grand slam over the left field wall to push the lead to (8-0).
The Lady Tigers would go on to add two runs in the next two innings to cut into UAPB lead, (8-2)
Despite Jackson St. effort in a comeback, UAPB continued to find the sweet spots on the barrel. In the bottom of sixth Drake double to left field scoring Jackson (9-2) who reached earlier on a walk. Freshman Kirsten Schmidt single to right, scoring Drake to close out game one of the three-game series.
Junior Sydney Green got the win on the mound for the Lady Lions. Green pitched a complete game, given up two runs with seven strikeouts in 6.0 IP.
"We appreciate the win and we're focusing on continuing the momentum as we head into our doubleheader tomorrow,'' said UAPB Head Coach Michael Bumpers.
Jackson led the Lady Lions at the plate going 1-for-4, with four RBIs, followed by Drake going 2-for-4, with two RBIs. Senior Anne Gerwitz, sophomores Alyssa Wesley, Desiree Bumpers, freshmen Remington Martinez, and Jasmine Carlson finished the game with one hit apiece.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast on Tuesday evening, UAPB will host Jackson St. Tuesday, March 30, in a doubleheader at 10 a.m. and noon.
