The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball team ends the regular season with a win over Prairie View A&M 3-0 (25-9, 26-24, 25-19) on Monday night.
The Lady Lions recognized seniors Breana August and Haley Gomez before the match for senior night.
UAPB finished out the season holding the longest home win streak after going undefeated in H.O. Clemmons Arena this season with nine wins.
"It all started when we got here together," said head coach Chelsey Lucas remarking on the season. "Most of these ladies got here when I did, and they wanted to build a program where we would be able to compete against any team. So, our mindset is always in 'Lion Mode'. We face any obstacle that's in our way. Adversity makes you stronger."
The Lady Lions were led by Destiny Thomas who finished with a game-high of 14 kills and two blocks. Zyonn Smith and Jayden James both added seven kills apiece in the match.
Vanessa Collins finished with a game-high 20 assists for UAPB. Nikole Akamine added 15 assists in the match.
Gomez defensively controlled the game with eight blocks in the match. Gomez was also recognized for setting the record for most blocks in school history (436).
Nyah Ellis had a game-high 19 digs to pace the Lady Lions defensively. August added eight digs to the total, and Kaila Robinson added eight digs while serving the ball well with a game-high 4 service aces.
The Lady Lions close out the regular season on a five-game win streak, which is a great momentum boost heading into postseason play.Â
"We have unfinished business every day," said Lucas. "Every team's goal is to win a championship, and if you say you have 'unfinished business' and want a championship, then you have to play like it. We know what we're up against going into the tournament, but we are going to fight."
UAPB went 13-3 in conference and will be the No. 3 seed in the SWAC Tournament held in Huntsville, AL. on the campus of Alabama A&M. The Lady Lions with face No. 6 Southern in the first round of the tournament.
