UAPB Softball Wraps Up Day One Of McNeese St. Tournament

LAKE CHARLES, LA. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team opened the 2020 campaign with an 11-8 loss to Prairie View in game one and 11-0 game two loss to McNeese St. at Joe Miller Field. 
 
GAME ONE: PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 11, UAPB 8
UAPB erupted for three runs in the bottom of the first off a trio doubles by seniors Sha'terrika Benard, Shanice Akins, and freshman Samaria Jackson. The Lady Lions added on another run going up 4-0 off a wild pitch, scoring Jackson.  
 
Prairie View A&M would respond by scoring 11 unanswered runs over the next six innings before a Lady Lions' seventh-inning rally. 
 
The Lady Lions started the rally with a double to center field by senior Anne Gerwitz, advancing Benard to third, who previously got on by a hit pitch. Akins would come up big at the plate with a double to left-center, scoring two runs to cut the Lady Panthers lead to 11-6.  
 
After the Lady Panthers exchanged pitchers, sophomore Desiree Bumpers would keep the rally going with a double to left-center scoring Akins to put the score at 11-7. Sophomore Felicia Drake singled to center field to score Bumpers to settle the score at 11-8 before the Lady Panthers would get the final out to sneak away with the win.  
 
As a team, UAPB collected 12 hits, led by Akins, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, followed by Jackson going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. 
 
Benard, Gerwitz, Bumpers, Drake added two hits apiece for UAPB. 
 
 
GAME TWO: MCNEESE ST. 11, UAPB 0
 McNeese St. jumped out ahead, scoring eight runs in the fourth inning, after going into the bottom of third with just a 1-0 lead over the Lady Lions.
  
UAPB slowed down McNeese St. bats in the first two innings before scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning and adding eight runs off four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  
Freshman, Samaria Jackson, and junior Deeanna Harrington both had one hit apiece for UAPB.
