Lady Lions Tops Mississippi Valley St.

ITTA BENA, MS. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team opened up the Mississippi St. Tournament with a 3-2 win over host Mississippi Valley St. Friday afternoon.

After the Devilettes took the lead in the bottom of the first inning, the Lady Lions stormed back, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning. 

Junior Deanna Harrington started the rally when she reached on an error, then advanced to second on a passed ball. Freshman, Jasmine Carlson made her collegiate debut with a single to left field, scoring sophomore Faith Santa Cruz, who pinch ran for Harrington to tie the game at 1-1. 

Junior Alyssa Wesley kept the rally going with a single up the middle, then stole second on the next pitch. With two outs, senior Sha'terricka Benard walked before senior Anne Gerwitz stepped up big with a double to left field, scoring Benard and Wesley to give UAPB the go-ahead lead at 3-2. 

Mississippi Valley would tack on a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but it was not enough in the comeback.

Gerwitz led the Lady Lions at the plate going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, followed by senior Shanice Akins going 2-for-3. 

Junior Shakeidria Hubbard picked up the win, pitching a complete game with four strikeouts. 

The Lady Lions will be back in action Saturday against Florida A&M at 10 a.m. and Tennessee St. at noon.
