ITTA BENA, MS.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team fell to Florida A&M 9-3 and Tennessee St. 8-6 on the final day of the Mississippi St. Tournament Saturday at the Delta Devilettes Field.
GAME 2: FLORIDA A&M 9 UAPB 3
Despite battling, the Lady Lions came up short against FAMU in their second game of the tournament.
UAPB got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, when junior Leslie Arreola reached on an error. The Lady Lions would take a 1-0 lead after the bases were loaded, and freshman Jasmine Carlson was hit by a pitch to bring in Arreola.
The Rattlers added two runs in the top of the third to take the lead at 2-1 before senior Shaniece Akins led off with a single in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Felicia Drake doubled to center field, scoring Akins to tie the game at 2-2.
After tying the game at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, UAPB took advantage of the Rattlers back to back walks. Junior Alyssa Wesley singled next at-bat, scoring sophomore Faith Santa Cruz who reached base as a pinch-runner for freshman Makenna Patt who reached on a walk.
The Ratters went on to score seven unanswered runs to clinch game two.
Drake led the Lady Lions at the plate going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
GAME 3: TENNESSEE ST. 8 UAPB 6
After being down five runs heading into the top of the third inning, the Lady Lions refused to back down. Patt started off with a single to right field, followed Wesley triple down left field, scoring Patt to cut the lead at 5-1. Freshman Samaria Jackson reached base on an error, scoring Wesley to cut the lead to three, at 5-2.
The Golden Lions added another run in the top of the fourth inning when Akins singled to right field, then advanced to second on a groundout. Patt would come up big with a single to center field, scoring Akins to put the score at 5-3.
The Lady Tigers added a run in the top of the fifth inning before the Lady Lions responded in the bottom of the fifth inning with back to back singles by freshman Brianna Schwan and senior Anne Gerwitz. Schwan would go on to score off an error on a failed pickoff to put the score at 6-4.
At the top of the sixth inning, UAPB added two runs to tie the game at 6-6. Sophomore Ashaunti Stinson, who previously pinch ran for junior Leslie Arreola on a walked scored on an error to cut the lead to one at 6-5. Schwan would follow up with a single to center field, then stole second before being knocked in with a single by Gerwitz to tie the game.
Tennessee St. tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the victory over UAPB.
Jackson led UAPB at the plate, going 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.
