Natchitoches, La. – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team dropped a 23-4 decision to Northwestern St. in game one and a 6-1 decision in game two to Murray St. Saturday to close out day two of the Lady Demon Classic.
GAME 1 : Northwestern St. 23 UAPB 4
The Lady Lions got on the board first in the top of the first with three consecutive singles by senior Anne Gerwitrz, sophomore Felicia Drake, and senior Shanice Akins to load the bases. Junior Leslie Arreola sac fly to left field gave UAPB a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Demons would add five runs in the bottom of the second inning before UAPB would cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Desiree Bumpers singled to right field, scoring Akins who singled earlier at-bat. Junior Deanna Harrington single up the middle, scoring Bumpers and junior Cayla Trotter, who pinch ran for Arreola.
Northwestern St. increased their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning to seal the win.
Akins led UAPB at the plate going 2-for-3, followed by Harrington going 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Gerwitz, Drake, and Bumpers each had one hit apiece for the Lady Lions.
GAME 2 : Murray St. 6 UAPB 1
The Racers jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first three innings, before the Lady Lions would add a run in the bottom of the fourth inning with Akins single to right field. Akins would advance to second on a wild pitch, then would advance to third with a single up the middle by sophomore Felicia Drake.
Bumpers lined a double down right-field line to cut the lead to 5-1, but it was not enough in the comeback.
The Lady Lions will conclude the Lady Demon Classic on Sunday when they take on Murray St. at 12:30 p.m.
