PITTSBURG, KS — The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's and women's track and field teams return to action in Pittsburg, KS on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15 in the 5th Annual Gorilla Classic at the Robert W. Plaster.
The meet is set to begin at 2 p.m. on Friday with field events before track events begin at 4 p.m. Day two of the meet will begin with the men's and women's 4x 800m relay followed by the men's high jump at noon on Saturday.
UAPB is scheduled to compete 22 athletes and are one among 30 schools entered to compete, before their last meet before the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship that will be held in Birmingham, Alabama Feb.20-21 at the Crossplaex.
At the Wendy's/Pittsburg St. Invitational, the Golden Lions had some of their best performance of the indoor season and a meet record. Sophomore Safiya John set a personal best and clinched first place in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.60. The Lady Lions 4x400m relay team composed of (senior Camiya Knight, freshman Caitlin Ragoonanan, junior Je-Risa James, and senior Ciara Thurston) placed third with a time of 3:53.66.
On the men's side, senior Wade Garner crossed the finish line in first place in the 800m with a time of 1:50.21. Garner also set a personal best and broke the meet record in the 800m. The Golden Lions 4x400m relay, (Garner, junior Akeem Marshall, Romario Marshall, and senior Rodney Griffin) placed third overall with a time of 3:14.92.
"This meet will be a tune-up meet, after being off a week from competing," said UAPB head track coach Christopher McCoy. "We're looking good as a team being rank in the top four on both sides in the conference."
