Lady Lions Defeat Three-Time Defending Champ Alabama State On Day One Of SWAC Roundup

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball team defeated three-time defending SWAC Champion Alabama State on day one of the SWAC Roundup at Prairie View A&M.
 
After falling in the opening match to Alabama A&M 3-1, the Lady Lions swept Alabama State 3-0 in the nightcap.
 
UAPB will face Miss. Valley State at 10 a.m. and Jackson State at 7 p.m. on day two of the roundup.

The Lady Lions bounced back from game one to beat Alabama State 25-23, 25-17, 25-18. 
 
"I'm so proud of my girls," said UAPB Head Coach Chelsey Lucas, who earned her first-win as Lady Lions' head coach.  "We came out with energy and determined to win. Even though we're a young ball club, the girls came out and executed to the end."
 
UAPB had three student-athletes to finish with nine kills in junior Bri-Anna Armstrong, freshman Zyaire Garrit, and sophomore Kaila Robinson. Freshman Elyssa Kennedy and senior Micayla Pope added 19 and 17 assists respectively.
 
On the defensive side freshman Breana August carried the load with 21 digs, followed with Armstrong and sophomore Haley Gomez with three block assists apiece.

The Lady Lions fell to the Lady Bulldogs 20-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-25 in their first conference game of the season.
"We came out a little nervous and had some opportunities we didn't take advantage of."
 
Sophomore Kaila Robinson led the Lady Lions with 10 kills and 11 digs, followed by freshman Zyaire Garrit with eight kills, nine digs, and two blocks. Freshman Elyssa Kennedy added 29 assists.
 
On the defensive side sophomore, Haley Gomez and Kennedy finished the game with two blocks apiece.
