PRAIRIE VIEW, TX. - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball team split their two matches, sweeping Mississippi Valley in game one and falling to Jackson St. in game two. Â

The Lady Lions swept Mississippi Valley 25-19, 25-12, 25-16 in their first game of day two in the SWAC Roundup.Â
"We are pleased with the way we came out," said first-year UAPB head coach Chelsey Lucas. "The ladies were able to show their dominance over the Devilettes. We are starting to grow as a team and will continue to develop and grow with each other as the season progresses."
Sophomore Haley Gomez and freshman Zyaire Garrit both finished with 12 kills apiece to lead UAPB on the offensive side, followed by freshman Darynne Bickers with seven. Freshman Elyssa Kennedy added  24 assists for UAPB. On the defensive side, Gomez finished with a game-high four block assists for UAPB.Â

JACKSON ST. 3 UAPB 2
UAPB went five sets in game two against Jackson St. but dropped a heartbreaker 15-25, 25-18, 25-20, 17-25, 7-15 Saturday evening.Â
In a match that was an instant battle from the beginning, the Lady Tigers won the first set, before the Lady Lions stormed back and won two consecutive sets. Â
Jackson St. would answer back in set four to create set five, before UAPB would drop the final set to split on day two.Â
"We are disappointed with our 5-set outcome but saw many great things that we have wanted to improve on as a team,"  said Lucas. "As a team, we've got  to limit our mistakes in close games."Â
Gomez led the way for UAPB in game two with 11 kills, followed by Robinson with seven. Kennedy continues to make her presence known on the court contributed 16 assists and senior Micayla Pope finished with 12.Â
UAPB will be back in action for the final day of SWAC Roundup Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against Alcorn St.Â
