James Cowan is entering his seventh year as the head coach for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's & women's Tennis program.
Cowan was named Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach at UAPB in 2013. Both his men's and women's team have won the NCAA Public Recognition Award with the women's team winning the award four years straight (2013-2016) and the men winning the award in 2017.
Q: Where are you from?
A: Memphis, TN
Q: How important is team bonding?
A: Team Bonding is very important especially in tennis because tennis is an individual sport. You want your players to understand team and to come together and one.
Q: What's your favorite food dish?
A: I love shrimp and macaroni and cheese!
Q: What's your favorite vacation spot?
A: So far Los Cabo but I have more traveling to do.
Q: What's the funniest thing you seen while playing tennis as a former student-athlete at UAPB?
A: The funniest thing I have seen was when my teammates died their hair green like a tennis ball.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time?
A: Traveling, Playing tennis or basketball, working out.
Q: Who's your favorite tennis player?
A: Roger Federer
Q: What inspired you to play tennis?
A: Competition! When I was younger I went to a summer camp and while in the camp I wanted to be the best. I haven't stopped playing since.
Q: What do you look for in considering a team captain?
A: I look for someone responsible, a leader, somebody that can communicate well with team mates.
Q: What's something about you that people don't know?
A: I became the Head Tennis Coach here at UAPB at 26 years old.
