Track Opens Outdoor Season at UCA Opener

Conway, Ark.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's and women's outdoor track teams opened the 2019 outdoor season over the weekend by competing at the UCA Opener in Conway, Ark.

There were several highlights from both the men's and women's side going into the first outdoor meet of the season. 

On the women's side, the Lady Lions had two student-athletes finished in the top sixth in the 400m hurdles, Arjai Johnson placed fourth with a time of 1:09.55 and Jyzmin Gray in sixth with a time of 1:10.46.  The Lady Lions (Camiya Knight, Arjai Johnson, Jyzmin Gray, and Je-Risa James) finished in fourth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:10.27 and third in the women's 1600 SMR with a time of 4:23.05.

In the field events, Sabrina Hollins placed second with a distance of 12.84m and Keziann Jones in third with a distance of 12.76m in the shot put competition.  In the Javelin event, true freshman Safiya John continues to make a strong showing, by winning the event with a distance of 38.50m and Keziann Jones in second with a throw of 37.20m.
 
On the men's side, Wade Garner picked up where he left off in the 2018 outdoor season, making a strong impression to kick off the season.  Garner finished second in the 1500m with a time of 4:09.42 followed by Akeem Marshall in fourth with a time of 4:11.75.  D'Andre Mighty also placed third in the 5000m with a time of 16:56.  In the 1600m SMR the Golden Lions (Myles Davis, Romario Marshall, Malique Smith, and Tyran Lyons) brought home the gold with a time of 3:31.58. 

In the field events, Shavonn Phipps led the way in the high jump with a leap of 1.88m 6'2" and Miles Dortch claimed second in the men's javelin with a distance of 47.79m 156'9".

UAPB men's and women's will be back in action next week March 16, in Memphis, TN in the Rhodes College Invitational.
