Golden Lions Fall on the Road to Grambling St.

GRAMBLING, La. – A dismal stretch late in the first half was too much for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff to overcome Saturday night at Grambling State.

The Tigers used a 21-4 run to bust open a close game and beat the Golden Lions 79-55 at the Hobdy Assembly Center.

Sophomore guard Prince Moss knocked down five three-pointers and finished with a game-high 21 points for Grambling State, which shot 50.9 percent (28 of 55) to snap its two-game losing streak in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.  Moss also added 5 rebounds and 6 steals for the Tigers (10-11, 4-4).  Junior guard Anthony Gaston tossed in 11 points for Grambling State.

Shaun Doss, a sophomore forward, had 19 points and senior guard Martaveous McKnight had 11 to lead UAPB (7-14, 4-4), which has struggled as of late.  The Golden Lions started league play 3-0 but has gone 1-4 since then. UAPB got off to a promising start Saturday and trailed just 16-12 with 12:03 left in the first half before Grambling State scored 21 of the next 25 points to build a 21-point lead.  The Tigers eventually led 42-27 at the break and continued to pour it on in the second half after the Golden Lions made a run.

UAPB trimmed Grambling State's lead to 47-36 following a basket from junior guard Jordan McNair with 14:49 remaining in the game.  But the Tigers used a 12-1 run over the next six minutes to re-establish control.

Golden Lions will continue on their road trip, as they will head to Jackson State to face the Tigers on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

FAST BREAK
  • McKnight grabbed nine rebounds and had three steals, both team highs for UAPB.

  • UAPB was just 16 of 46 (34.8 percent) shooting, including only 9 of 19 after halftime.
  • Doss hit only 3 of 8 shots but went 13 of 19 from the free-throw line.
