Big Second Half Sends Tigers Past Golden Lions

JACKSON, Miss. – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff gave Jackson State all it wanted in the first half of Monday's game, but the Tigers got a key basket just before halftime to turn things around in their 65-52, Southwestern Athletic Conference victory at the Lee E. Williams Athletic Assembly Center.

Senior reserve guard Jontrell Walker offset his game-high seven turnovers with 19 points for Jackson State (9-13, 6-3), which had trouble slowing down UAPB in the first half until a timely shot changed the game's complexion.  The Golden Lions were down 31-28, but a turnover eventually led to a three-pointer from Walker with four seconds showing to give the Tigers a 34-28 lead at halftime.  Jackson State then scored 17 of the first 23 points of the second half to establish a big enough lead to keep UAPB on its heels for the rest of the game.

Freshman guard Lemmie Howard had 12 points and junior guard Dontelius Ross tossed in 11 for the Tigers.

McKnight and senior guard Charles Jackson each scored 12 points for UAPB (7-15, 4-5), lead the Golden Lions.  But the Golden Lions were still within striking distance of the Tigers early in the second half. The game was tied 36-36 after McKnight's three-pointer with 17:04 to go, but Jackson State surged out on a 15-0 run to pull away.  UAPB would get no closer than 10 points for the remainder of the game.

The Golden Lions will get another crack at snapping their recent slide Saturday when they travel to Alabama State.  UAPB follows that showdown with a trip to Alabama A&M on Monday before returning home to entertain Southern on Feb. 16.
