Lady Lions Fall To Grambling St.

GRAMBLING, La. – Grambling State got back in the win column Saturday, and the Lady Tigers have senior guard Shakyla Hill to thank for it.

The Little Rock native became the first women's player in NCAA Division 1 history to record two quadruple doubles in one season when she had 21 points, 16 rebounds, 13 assists, and 10 steals in the Lady Tigers' 77-57 victory over the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in a Southwestern Athletic Conference battle at the Hobdy Assembly Center.

Hill, the SWAC's preseason player of the year, notched her first quadruple-double last season when she had 15 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals in Grambling State's 93-71 victory over Alabama State on Jan. 4.  On Saturday, she clinched another historic milestone when she stole the ball with 52 seconds left in the game.

Grambling had four other players scored in double figures for Grambling State (9-11, 6-2), with sophomore guard Ariel Williams ending with 11. Senior guards Takerra Parsons and Jazmin Boyd and sophomore guard Justice Coleman each had 10 points for the Lady Tigers, who were coming off a 77-74 loss to Jackson State.

Junior guard Aiya El Hassan had 14 points and eight rebounds for UAPB, which held an early six-point lead in the first quarter.  Junior guard Noe'll Taylor and Atitiana Vincent both ended with 10 points.

UAPB led 12-6 with 3:57 left in the opening period after El Hassan's jumper, but Hill's 12-footer started a 10-0, quarter-ending run for Grambling State. The Lady Tigers pushed their advantage to as much as 14 in the second quarter and held a 36-25 lead at halftime.

Grambling State's lead ballooned to 20 points in the third quarter, but UAPB managed to climb within 14 (58-44) with 7:44 to go in the game after a basket from senior guard Kye Richardson.  The Lady Lions, however, would get no closer.  Hill answered with a pair of free throws as the Lady Tigers sealed the victory.

The Lady Lions will bounce back on Monday when they play at Jackson State.  Game-time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
