Lady Lions Fall to Lady Tigers on the Road

HOUSTON, TX. – A third-quarter push was enough for Texas Southern to put a stop to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff winning streak Saturday night.

The Lady Tigers snapped a 25-25 halftime tie by scoring 11 of the first 15 points of the second half to pull away for a 62-49 victory in Southwestern Athletic Conference women's action at the H&PE Arena.

Junior forward Niya Mitchell had 14 points and 18 rebounds while senior guard Marquia Turner finished with 13 points and a game-high 5 assists for Texas Southern (11-13, 7-6), which outscored UAPB 37-24 in the second half to snap its two-game losing skid.  The Lady Tigers also denied the Lady Lions of a chance to build off last Monday's victory over Alcorn St.  Instead, UAPB (5-15, 2-12) now finds itself in a tough battle, but still a good chance of making the conference tournament.

Junior guards Noe'll Taylor and Atitiana Vincent combined for 23 points for the Lady Lions, who were just 8-of-28 shooting in the second half after hitting 10 of 24 shots over the first two quarters.  Taylor had 12 points and Vincent ended with 11.

The teams, though, were locked in a battle for nearly three quarters. The game was tied at 29-29 before a tip-in from Mitchell started a 7-0 run for the Lady Tigers.  Texas Southern pushed its lead to 45-35 by quarter's end, then scored the first five points of the fourth to open a 15-point lead.

The Lady Lions head back on the road Monday at Prairie View A&M before starting a two-game homestand next Saturday.
