Volleyball Edged by Southern In Five Sets

Dueling for five sets, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball team was edged by Southern 25-22, 24-26, 23-25, 25-7, 9-15 Thursday night at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.
This is the second time this season the Lady Lions battled in a five-set match in conference play.  In set one UAPB struck first with a 25-22 win before the Lady Jags stormed back to win sets two and three. 

"This was a tough game we let slip away," said first-year UAPB head coach Chelsey Lucas.  "We can't afford to make mistakes, we got to learn finish to the end. I'm positive that we will rebound from this loss and come back strong."

UAPB would rally behind the high energy crowd to race out to an 11-0 run over Southern and claimed the fourth set 25-7. The Lady Jags would respond by jumping out to an early lead and holding on for the win in set five.  

Sophomore Haley Gomez leads UAPB with a game-high 18 kills, followed by freshman Zyonn Smith with 10 kills, and Sophomore Kaila Robinson and Zyaire Garrit with eight kills apiece.  

Freshman Elyssa Kennedy added 20 assists along with senior Micayla Pope with 10. On the defensive side, Gomez led all defensive players with seven blocks.

UAPB will be back in action Sunday at Prairie View at 5:30 p.m.
