MONTGOMERY, Ala. (March 7) - Alabama State held on for a 48-46 win over the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Women's Basketball team, here Tuesday night at the Oliver-Dunn Acadome in the quarterfinal round of the 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament.

In a sluggish first half, ASU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in with Brittney Wright scoring the first three points of the quarter for the Lady Hornets.

Shawntayla Harris scored UAPB's first basket of the contest with her layup at the 5:08 mark of the quarter.Â

Ewert scored the final five points of the quarter to give the Lady Hornets, an 8-3 lead heading into the second quarter of play.

In the second quarter, the Lady Hornets extended their lead to 16-5 on a Wright layup at the 5:15 mark of the quarter.

UAPB then used an 8-2 run to cut ASU's lead to 18-13 on an
Aiya El Hassan jumper with 1:39 remaining before the break.

The Lady Hornets closed out the quarter with a 5-1 run to take a 23-14 lead into the halftime break.

UAPB finished the first half shooting 21.4 percent (6-of-28), while ASU shot 35.7 percent (10-of-28).

The Lady Lions cut ASU's lead to 23-20 on a Faith Hanta layup with 7:25 left in the third quarter, capping a 6-0 run by UAPB.

ASU then countered with a 9-1 run to take a 32-21 lead on a Victoria Harvey layup at the 4:09 mark of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Lions slowed chipped away at the Lady Hornets' lead to tied the contest at 40-40 with a 12-4 run, capped off by a Brewton jumper with 2:13 left in regulations.

ASU then scored the next six points to take a 46-40 lead on a  Tatyana Calhoun free throw with 22 seconds left in regulation. Â

UAPB would then scored six points in the final 12 seconds of the contest with a
Niya Head three point play and a Malaik Muhammad three pointer.Â

Damya Toney would then hit a pair of free throws with six second left in regulations for the 48-46.

ASU (14-15) was paced by Wright with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Ziara Doe added 10 points to lead the Lady Hornets.

UAPB (12-18) was led by Head with a team high 11 points and nine rebounds, followed by Harris with nine points and nine rebounds.
