UAPB DEFEATS ALABAMA A&M, 65-55 TO WIN THIRD STRAIGHT

Box Score NORMAL, Ala. (Feb. 6). - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Women's Basketball team extended their win streak to three as the Lady Lions defeated Alabama A&M, 65-55 here Monday night at Elmore Gymnasium.
 
UAPB (9-13, 6-5 SWAC) had three players to score in double-figures with Faith Ohanta scoring a team high 15 points to lead the Lady Lions.  Both Ajia Richardson and Shawntayla Harris finished with 13 points each in the contest.  Ohanta led the Lady Lions on the boards with seven rebounds, while Destiny Brewton dished out a team high five assists.
 
AAMU (2-18, 0-11 SWAC) was led by Josta Totten with a game high 18 points to lead all scorers.  Juliette Akinwole added 12 points and Jameica Cobbs finished with 10.  Both Akinwole and Hilary Williams led the Lady Bulldogs in rebounding with six boards each.  Also Williams dished out a team high four assists for AAMU.
 
UAPB only trailed AAMU twice in the contest, when the Lady Bulldogs scored the first basket of the game to take a 2-0 lead on an Akinwole layup at the 7:55 mark of the first quarter.  The Lady Bulldogs held the lead again at the 5:01 mark on a Totten three pointer to give AAMU a 7-6 lead.
 
The Lady Lions regained the lead on a Richardson three pointer at the 4:40 mark of the quarter to give UAPB a 9-7 lead over the Lady Bulldogs.
 
In the second quarter, AAMU would cut UAPB's lead to two points on two occasions on a Totten three pointer to cut the Lady Lions' lead to 27-25 at the 2:28 mark.  Then again on an Akinwole layup with 1:52 to go before the half, making the score 29-27 in favor of the Lady Lions.
 
UAPB went into the break with a 33-28 lead as they finished the first half shooting 42.9 percent (12-of-28), whereas AAMU shot 38.4 percent (10-of-26).
 
UAPB opened the third quarter with a 9-3 run to take a 42-32 lead over AAMU on an Ohanta layup with 5:40 left to play in the quarter. 
 
AAMU closed out the quarter with a 16-5 run to cut UAPB's lead to 48-47 on an Alisha Davis layup with 52 seconds left to play. 
 
In the final quarter of play both teams would combine for three field goals with UAPB going one-for-nine from the field, while UAPB made two field goals in 10 attempts.  
 
UAPB in the quarter would shoot 63.6 percent from the charity strip as they connected on 14 free throws in 22 attempts, whereas AAMU would shoot 75 percent as they made nine free throws in 12 attempts.
 
The Lady Lions finished the contest shooting 38.0 percent (19-of-50), whereas the Lady Bulldogs shot 45.7 percent (21-of-46).
