Box Score HOUSTON, Texas (Feb. 18) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Women's Basketball team defeated Texas Southern, 71-60 for their sixth straight win here Saturday afternoon at the Health and Physical Education Arena.
UAPB (12-13, 9-5 SWAC) was led by both
Faith Ohanta and
Destiny Brewton. Ohanta finished the contest with a double-double scoring 18 points and pulling down 13 rebounds, while Brewton pumped in 14 points and dished out five assists.
TSU (15-9, 9-4 SWAC) was led by Joyce Kennerson with a game high 23 points. Chynna Ewing was the only other Lady Tiger to score in double-figures with 11 points.
In the first quarter of play, UAPB jumped out to a 4-1 lead on an Ashlee Daniel layup with 8:17 to play in the quarter.
TSU ended the quarter with a 13-10 run to tie the contest at 14-14.
A field goal by
Niya Head with 4:20 left to play before intermission gave the Lady Lions a 25-17 lead over the Lady Tigers.
TSU pulled within 27-24 on a Kennerson three pointer with 2:57 left to play in the quarter, capping a 7-2 run by the Lady Tigers.
UAPB closed out the quarter with a 6-2 run to take a 33-26 lead into the intermission.
The Lady Lions opened the third quarter of play with 9-5 run to take a 42-31 lead on a
Shawntayla Harris jumper with 7:04 remaining.
TSU outscored UAPB, 18-4 to close out the quarter to take a 50-46 lead over UAPB into the fourth quarter of play.
In the fourth quarter, UAPB outscored TSU 19-3 to take a 67-53 lead on a pair of Brewton free throws with 2:36 left to play in regulation. The Lady Lions outscored the Lady Tigers 25-10 in the fourth quarter for the 71-60 final.
UAPB finished the contest shooting 46.2 percent (24-of-52), while TSU shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56).
