UAPB FALLS TO ALABAMA STATE, 9-0 IN FIRST ROUND OF SWAC SOFTBALL TOURNEY

IRONDALE, Ala. (May 11) - Alabama State scores eight runs in the fourth inning to propel them to a 9-0 victory over the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Softball team in the first round of the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament, here Wednesday afternoon at the Shea Brothers Softball Complex.
 
UAPB was held hitless for three innings of play.  Monique Nikolao broke up the ASU no hitter in the top of the fifth inning with a single down the third baseline.
 
ASU finished the contest with a game high 10 hits led by Kendal Core with three hits in three at-bats, driving in four runs and scoring one, including a two runs homer. 
 
Maddie Phelps (17-11) received the win for ASU.  Phelps allowed one hits and struck out three in five innings of work for the Lady Hornets.
 
Makayla Hunter (6-5) received the loss for UAPB.  Hunter gave up six hits, five earned runs and struck out one in three innings of work.  Hailey Forbes also toed the rubber for the Lady Lions.  She gave up four hits in one inning of work.
 
ASU grabbed an early 1-0 in their half of the first inning with Valerie Centeno scoring on a Core single to right field.
 
The Lady Hornets would then plate eight runs in their half of the fourth inning for the 9-0 finale, invoking the eight-run mercy rule after five innings of play.
 
With the loss, UAPB moves into the loser bracket and will face Mississippi Valley State, tomorrow, Thursday, May 12 in a 5p.m. elimination game, where ASU will face Southern University in a winner's bracket game.
