TEXAS SOUTHERN HOLDS OFF UABP FOR 57-51 WIN

Box Score PINE BLUFF, Ark. (Feb. 22) - Texas Southern holds off the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Women's Basketball Team for a 57-51 win over the Lady Lions, here Monday night at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.
 
Destiny Brewton gave the Lions a 6-4 lead with her made jumper at the 7:32 mark of the first quarter.
 
Joyce Kennerson tied the contest for TSU at 6-6 with her made basket with 6:32 remaining in the quarter.
 
Both teams traded baskets in the final six minutes of the quarter for a 13-13 tie heading into the second quarter of play.
 
TSU opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run to take a 22-13 lead, capped off by a Kennerson three pointer with 6:24 to go.
 
The Lady Lions countered with a 12-2 run to take a 25-24 lead into halftime.
 
UAPB finished the first half shooting 40.7 percent (11-of-27), while TSU shot 26.7 percent (8-of-30).
 
In the third quarter, UAPB tied the contest at 28-28 with a Niya Head free throw with 7:34 remaining.
 
TSU then used an 11-3 run to take a 39-32 lead on a Ladeyh Forte with 2:07 to go as the Lady Tigers took a 43-37 lead into the fourth quarter of play.
 
UAPB cut TSU's lead to 53-51 on a Head layup with 56 seconds left in regulation as the Lady Lions outscored the Lady Tigers 14-10.  But that would be close as UAPB would get as TSU with a perfect four-four from the charity stripe for the 57-51 win.
 
The Lady Lions finished the contest shooting 41.8 percent (23-of-55), while the Lady Tigers shot 31.6 percent (18-of-57).
 
UAPB (7-19, 4-11) had a pair of Lady Lions to score in double-figures with Head finishing with a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds, while Brewton added 10 and dished out six assists.
 
TSU (16-8, 12-2) has three Lady Tigers to score in double-figures with Kianna Vines recording a double-double on the night with 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Kennerson also punched in 18 points and Toni Cheadle finished with 10.
