MISS. VALLEY STATE HOLDS OFF UAPB FOR 62-60 WIN

Box Score GREENWOOD, Miss. (Jan. 4)  - The University of Arkansas at Pine Women's Basketball team fell short in their conference opener against Mississippi Valley State as the Devilettes held for a 62-60 win over the Lady Lions, here Monday night at the Leflore County Civic Center.
 
MVSU scored the first five points of the game to on back-to-back field goals with a three pointer by Christina Reed and a layup by Ashley Beals, giving the Devilettes a 5-0 lead with 7:17 remaining in the first stanza.
 
UAPB tied the contest at 5-5 as they scored five point in one minute and five seconds on field goal by Ajia Richardson and a three point play by Destiny Brewton with tying the contest at 5-5 with 6:12 to go in the quarter.
 
MVSU then  used an 8-3 run to take a 13-8 lead, capped off by a Kahdejah Stevens free throw with 1:02 left in the first.
 
UAPB closed out the first quarter with a 5-2 run to cut, capped off by a Niya Head three pointer with three seconds left in the quarter as the Lady Lions went into the second quarter trailing MVSU, 15-13.
 
The Lady Lions opened the second quarter with an 8-3 run to take a 21-18 lead on a Head layup with 8:24 reaming in the period.
 
UAPB extended their lead to 28-24 on a Cassidy Wright jumper with 3:13 remaining in the quarter.
 
MVSU tied the contest at 28-28 on a Melissa Hickman layup with 2:37 to go.
 
UAPB took a 30-29 lead into the break as Tyjha McGee scored the Lady Lions final points of the half at the 1:05 mark of the half.
 
The Lady Lions finished the first half shooting 42.9 percent (12-of-28), whereas MVSU shot 32.3 percent.
 
MVSU opened the third quarter with a 10-3 run to take a 39-33 lead on a Stevens three pointer with 5:51 remaining in the quarter.
 
The Lady Lions outscored MVSU 8-7 in the final minutes of the third quarter as the Devilettes took a 46-41 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
In the final period of play, UAPB cut MVSU's lead to 48-47 on a 6-2 run, capped off by a Brewton jumper with 8:58 remaining in the quarter.
 
The Lady Lions tied the contest at 53-53 on a McGee jumper with 5:45 remaining.  Then a field goal by Brewton would give the Lady Lions a 55-53 lead at the 4:.34 mark of the period.
 
MVSU regained the lead on a pair of free throws by Zemoria Jernigan with 3:28 left in the quarter.
 
UAPB then regained the lead on a Brewton jumper with 2:03 left in the quarter, giving the Lady Lions a 57-56 lead.
 
MVSU regained the lead on back-to-back baskets by Beals and Jernigan, making the score 60-57 in favor of the Devilettes with 20 seconds left in the quarter. 
 
Jernigan made a pair of free throws with six seconds left in the game to give the MVSU a 62-57 lead.  
 
Head would hit a three pointer with two seconds left in the contest for the 62-60 finale.
 
UAPB (3-9, 0-1 SWAC) had a pair of Lady Lions to score in double-figures with Brewton scoring a team high 20 points, followed by Head with12.  Ajia Richardson led the team in rebounds with seven.
 
MVSU (3-8, 1-0 SWAC) was paced by Beals as she finished with a double-double in 20 points and 14 rebounds.  Jernigan added 14, followed by Stevens with 11 and Christina Reed with 10.
