ALABAMA STATE DEFEATS UAPB, 72-63
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Jan. 11) - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Women's Basketball second half rally was not enough as Alabama State defeated the Lady Lions, 72-63 here Monday afternoon at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
 
Britney Wright gave the Lady Hornets an 8-3 lead on layup with 4:41 left in the first quarter with her scoring ASU's eight points of the game.
 
UAPB cut ASU's lead to 16-10 on an Ajia Richardson jumper with 1:36 remaining in the first quarter.
 
The Lady Lions finished the first quarter scoring six points in the paint, one point off of turnover and four second chance points as went into the third qhttp://www.uapblionsroar.com/admin/admin_main.aspx?view=stories&action=&target=topuarter trailing ASU, 20-12.
 
In the second quarter, ASU extended their lead to 15 points with UAPB going into the break trailing the Lady Hornets, 39-24.
 
The Lady Lions finished the first half shooting 37.0 percent (10-of-27), whereas the Lady Hornets shot 48.3 percent (14-of-29).
 
UAPB opened the third stanza with a 9-2 run to cut ASU's lead to 41-33 on a Diamond Richardson free throw with 7:15 left in the quarter.
 
After three quarters of play, UAPB went into the fourth quarter trailing ASU, 56-45.
 
In the fourth quarter, UAPB would cut ASU's lead to nine points on several occasions in the period with the Lady Lions outscoring the Lady Hornets, 18-16 in the stanza.
 
UAPB finished the contest shooting 41.3 percent (26-of-63), whereas ASU shot 42.3 percent (22-OF-52).
 
The Lady Lions had three Lady Lions to score in double-figures with Ajia Richardson scoring a team high 17 points, followed by Destiny Brewton with 16 and Niya Head with 12.  Brewton led the team in assists with five, whereas Head led the team in rebounding with seven.
 
ASU was led by Wright with 20 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Daniele Ewert with 13 points. 
 
With the win, ASU improves to 4-9 overall and 2-2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while UAPB lowers their record to 3-11 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
