Box Score STARKVILLE, Miss. (Aug. 29)-In their final match of the Mississippi State Invitational, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Volleyball team rally was not enough as Louisiana-Monroe held on to defeat the Lady Lions, 3-0 (13-25, 22-25, 20-25), here Friday afternoon at the Newell-Grissom Arena.
In the first set, ULM jumped out to a 14-5 lead capped off by a Kimberlie Alvarado kill. Then the Warhawks extended their lead to 20-9 on an UAPB bad set as ULM went on to win the set 25-13 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
UAPB rebounded in the second set as they took a 9-5 lead, capped off by a
Kayla Dowdell kill.
ULM used s 5-1 run to tie the set at 10-10 on a Taylor Zaeke kill.
The Lady Lions regained the lead on a
Lauren Corby service ace, giving UAPB a 16-15 lead. Then ULM would rattle off the next five points to take a 20-18 lead.
UAPB then closed the gap on a Dowdell kill, cutting ULM's lead to 23-22. ULM would hold off the UAPB rally as Zaeske recorded the next two scores to give the Warhawks the 25-23 win, giving ULM a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, UAPB took a 5-4 lead on a
Natalie Gibbs kill.
Then ULM used a 6-1 run to take a 10-6 lead, capped off by a Lady Lion bad set.
UAPB fought and clawed their way back into the set with a 10-7 run to cut ULM's lead to 17-16 on a kill by Gibbs.
But that was not enough as the Warhawks closed out the set with an 8-4 run to win the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
UAPB (0-3) was paced by Dowdell with six kills, followed by Gibbs with five and Corby with four.
Katy Hufnagel led the team in assists with 17, while
Courtney Brand tallied a team high digs.
ULM (2-2) was led by Taylor with eight kills, followed by Sarah Woods with seven and both Hadley Swartz and Jennifer McClendon finished with six apiece to lead the Warhawks. Presleigh Williams led the team in assists with 18, while Taylor finished with a team high 10 digs.
