Women's Basketball: Lady Hornets Slip Past Lady Lions,69-51

Box Score Pine Bluff, AR.- Nakiya Smith scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Lady Hornets in double figures scoring, as Alabama St. defeated the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff (UAPB) 69-51 in a Southwestern Conference (SWAC) game at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

Lady Hornets (10-12, 3-8 SWAC) also got 13 points Ashunte Smith and 12 points from Kayla Tucker.

UAPB (3-18, 2-9 SWAC) was led by Christina Lasane who finished with a game-high 17 points. The Lady Lions, who's coming off a win Saturday night over Alabama A&M, now dropped their second consecutive game to Alabama St.


After both teams exchanged lead in the 11:34 mark, Alabama St. began to heat up with back-to-back baskets by Tucker and Ewert. The Lady Hornets later used a 16-6 spurt in the last five minutes to take a 28-18 lead. A Free throw by the Lady Lions Erin Campbell ended the run, but the Lions continue to stay in the game.

Alabama St. hot shooting would cool off, However UAPB was only able to score six points during that stretch to pull within 33-23. That would be as close as the Lady Lions would get, as the Hornets took a 35-24 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Hornets added to their lead, by using a 14-5 run over the course of 10 minutes to take a 20-point lead at 49-29 with 9:58 to play to all but seal the victory.

The Lady Lions defense forced the Lady Hornets to15 takeaways in the game, scoring 10 points off turnovers.

Arkansas Pine Bluff finished the game shooting 28.1 percent (18-of-64) from the field and connected on 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) free throws.

The Lady Hornets went 26-of-65 (40.0 percent) from the floor, including 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) from three-point range. Alabama St. also went 10-of-16 from the charity line for 62.5 percent.

The Lady Lions will start their two game road trip in Baton Rouge against Southern Lady Jaguars on Saturday, Feb. 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
