Box Score Pine Bluff, AR.- University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team (1-13, 0-4, SWAC) faced a tough uphill climb Saturday afternoon on their home opener. The Lady Lions was in search of its first conference win, but Southern University (9-5, 5-0 SWAC) managed to pull out an 84-70 victory.
In the first half the Lady Lions waste no time to jump on the board scoring first with a jumper by
Cassidy Wright making the score 2-0. Southern was quick to respond by tying the game and eventually took the lead after both teams exchanged baskets mid-way through the first half.
UAPB outplayed Southern in the first half and held them to one its lowest performance in conference play, shooting 14-of-30(46.67%). The Lady Lions shot 4-of-7(57.14%) from the three point line in the first half to keep them within single digit.
With a little under 10 minutes to play before halftime UAPB held its largest lead of the game 17-14 with a bucket from
Charisse Carr, before the Jaguars outscored the Lady Lions down the stretch to take the lead into the locker room with a 37-32 lead at halftime.
To complete the first half, the Jaguars shot 64.29 percent (9-of-14) from the field with Jasmine Jefferson totaling a team-high 20 points (9-of-16). Adrian Sanders also added 17 points, follow by 15 from Kendra Coleman.
However, the Lady Jaguars opened the second half on a 10-0 run, before the Lions storm back cutting the deficit 49-41after Jazyme Victorian drained a bucket with 13:46 left on the clock.
Nevertheless, the Jaguars bounced back from their slow start to go up, 68-53, at the 8:22 mark after a three pointer by guard Kendra Coleman. After building double-digit point lead, Southern did not look back the rest way, despite a late run by the Lady Lions.
At game's end, UAPB had three player scored in double figures spearheaded by
Cassidy Wright with 18 points, followed by Jazyme Victorian with 16 points shooting 7-of-8 from the field, also
Christina Lasane added 11 point and
Carlisha Walker chipped in with 10 points.
Coming up, the Lady Lions will stay home to face the Alcorn St. on Monday 5:30 p.m.
