Montgomery, Al- The University of Arkansas Pine Bluff women's basketball team (1-12, 0-3 SWAC) found themselves in a tough match-up throughout the game in Monday night SWAC contest as the Lady Hornets of Alabama State (2-11, 1-2 SWAC), led by guard Brittney Wright (19 points) and guard Taila Arrington (11 points), pulled out a tough victory.
Alabama State didn't hesitate to get on the board first with a jumper by Britney Wright making the score 2-0. UAPB answered back fast with Chrsitina Lasane countering with a soft touch shot tying the game 2-2.
The Lady Hornets then went on a 5-0 run before UAPB
Charisse Carr nailed a three pointer making the score 7-5. Both team exchanged baskets under the 11:00 minute mark, before the Lady Lions jumped to a seven point lead with a three point play by
Cassidy Wright making the score 26-18. The Lady Hornets stormed back hitting nine unanswered points to take the lead 27-26 before going into the locker room being tied at 32-32.
UAPB shot 3-for-4(75.0%) from the three points line in the first half.
Second half, both teams continue to stay neck and neck with the Hornets jumping to an eight point lead 49-37 with less than six minutes taking off the clock. The Lady Lions went to a 30 second time out, but came out with and pressured the Hornets reducing their lead to four points, (49-45).
For UAPB, it was bothered by rebounds and second chance points, headlined being out rebounded 44-37.
In the second half the Lady Lions offensively struggled by shooting 9-for-24(37.5%) compared to shooting 14-for-31(45.8%) in the first.
The Lions defense turned it up a notch forcing the Lady Hornets to 12 turnovers and five steals for the game.
UAPB had four players in double figure, leading the way was
Cassidy Wright with 14 points,
Christina Lasane with 12 points, followed by Jazyme Victorian and
Charisse Carr with 11 points apiece.
Next up, the Lady Lions will be home 5:30p.m. against Southern University Lady Jaguars in Saturday home opener (Greek Night) January 18, at the H.O.Clemmons Arena.
