PINE BLUFF -- The Lady Lion soccer team rolled past Williams Baptist 9-0 on Monday to pick up their first win of the season. The game was called with 6:42 left due to darkness.
Kayla Reynolds led the onslaught with two goals and two assists for UAPB. Celeste Carrera also scored a pair of goals and had an assist, while Czelene Carrera had a goal and an assist. Molly Stone, Emily Antoku, Erica Cervantes and Traebiyana Dimanche all had a goal each.
"This was a game that we had to play well and win," said UAPB coach Rohan Naraine. "I know they're a young team, but I've been there many times too with many programs. One thing about them, they have a great, young team, good players who hustle and never stop playing."
"But for us it was good, getting this win together, scoring a lot of goals, getting a shutout, saw a lot of players play in different places," said Naraine, whose team improved to 1-5. "We kept the intensity. Sometimes when you play a team that's a young team, you drop to their level, but I think we stayed at our level. I saw some nice things going on there."
After having a total of three shots in four of the first five matches, UAPB had 25 shots against Williams Baptist. Fifteen of the shots were on-goal. Meanwhile, compared to the first five games, goalkeeper Alyssa Cobbs had a virtual vacation, only facing three shots, and snuffing out the only one headed for the net.
Naraine was particularly happy to see his team's energy go the distance in the win. "One of the biggest things is that our fitness is getting there," he said. "I knew that once our fitness got there, we would start playing a lot better. That's one of the things I was concerned about was our fitness level with it being so hot."
That conditioning should serve the Lady Lions well when they head to the heat and humidity in Florida this weekend. UAPB faces North Florida on Friday, then Florida Atlantic on Sunday in Jacksonville.
