ALEXANDRIA, LA – The Lady Lions advance to the final game of the SWAC tournament with a 1-0 victory today versus Southern University.
The weather conditions were warm and sunny with a light breeze which were perfect for today's game. The Lady Lions were geared up and ready to take on the Lady Jaguars. The first half began with a UAPB kick-off.
Southern's strategy for the game was to sit back and let the Lady Lions come at them. They did this to try to clog up the goal area and slow down the UAPB attack. But the Lady Lions kept putting on the pressure and had many chances on goal but Southern's goalkeeper was having a good game. All of the play was in Southern's end because of their strategic effort and the score was 0-0 at halftime.
But the Lady Lions were not fazed by Southern's strategy and were determined to find the back of the net. In the first minutes of the second half, senior forward
Nicole Parks-Powell scored the winning goal of the game. Parks-Powell's goal was assisted by senior forward
Silvia Fuentes and junior midfielder
Taryn Wright.
“I am pleased with how the girls responded to what Southern's game plan was today. We moved the ball around at our feet and tried new options. The girls' response was very mature and composed. I am so proud of them for showing poise in an important semifinal game when their season was on the line,” said Head Coach Roberto Mazza.
The Lady Lions will face the Delta Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State in the final game on Sunday at 12:00PM.
