MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's basketball team had four players score in double figures and cruised to an 88-46 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in its season opener Saturday evening at the Al McGuire Center.
Marquette opened the game with a 7-0 lead, while holding the Lady Lions without a basket for the first 4:30 of the game. The Golden Eagles pushed that lead to 21 points, 24-3, with just over nine minutes remaining in the half.
LaQuisha Slaton, Charnecia McRae and Jasmine Abrams gave the Lady Lions some life with buckets during a 13-6 run which cut Marquette's lead to 14 points, 20-16, with 3:54 remaining in the half.
In turn, the Golden Eagles answered with a 9-4 run through the end of the first half to go into the locker room with a 19-point lead, 39-20.
Marquette jumped on a 10-2 run out of the intermission to go ahead 29 points, 53-24, with 15:18 to play. Marquette held on to a 20-plus point led through the remainder of the game and took its largest lead of the game, 42 points, with 1:31 left.
Jasmine Abrams led the Lady Lions with 16 points. Right behind her was LaQuisha Slaton with 15.
The Lady Lions will be back in action Monday, Nov. 15 against Arkansas State at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro, AR.
