Gabrielle Floyd is entering her fifth season as head coach of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball program after being named the eighth head coach in program history on May 7, 2022. Since taking over the Golden Lions, Floyd has focused on rebuilding the program through strong recruiting, player development, academic excellence, and a culture centered on accountability and competitiveness.
Under Floyd's leadership, UAPB has continued to make strides both on and off the court while developing student-athletes into conference-level performers. During the 2024 season, Zykia Jones earned Second Team All-SWAC honors as an Outside/Right Side Hitter, becoming one of the program's top offensive threats and continuing Floyd's reputation for developing all-conference talent.
Before arriving at UAPB, Floyd spent nearly two decades at Texas Southern University, including serving as head coach during the 2021 season after more than 10 years as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. During her tenure with the Tigers, she helped build one of the SWAC's most consistent volleyball programs, leading Texas Southern to three Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division Championships and multiple appearances in the SWAC Tournament Championship match.
Floyd played a vital role in recruiting and developing numerous All-SWAC performers throughout her career. Under her guidance, more than 15 student-athletes earned All-SWAC recognition, including Danielle Lilley, who was selected to the 2021 SWAC Preseason Second Team, and Thalia Cordero Moreno, who earned 2021 First Team All-SWAC honors.
Taking over the Texas Southern program during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Floyd successfully guided the Lady Tigers through one of the most challenging periods in collegiate athletics. Despite unprecedented obstacles, the program qualified for the 2021 SWAC Tournament while also earning the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for maintaining a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or higher.
As an assistant coach, Floyd helped orchestrate Texas Southern's resurgence, highlighted by the program's first winning season since 2001 in 2013. Her impact extended well beyond match day, as she became one of the conference's premier recruiters while helping establish a culture of sustained success that produced conference championships and postseason appearances.
A native of Missouri City, Texas, Floyd enjoyed an outstanding playing career at Texas Southern as a two-sport student-athlete in volleyball and tennis. During her senior season in 2001, she served as team co-captain while earning Second Team All-SWAC, SWAC All-Tournament Team, SWAC Player of the Week, and Preseason First Team All-SWAC honors. She helped lead the Tigers to a Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division Championship and the No. 1 seed in the SWAC Tournament after finishing third on the team in kills with 213 and tying for third in the conference with 270 digs.
Throughout her collegiate career, Floyd established herself as one of the conference's top defensive players while earning multiple All-Tournament selections and tournament MVP honors. She concluded her career among Texas Southern's most accomplished student-athletes before beginning her coaching career with the Tigers.
Following her graduation in 2002, Floyd returned to Texas Southern as a graduate assistant before being promoted to assistant coach in 2005. Her coaching career also extended into the classroom, where she served as a full-time professor in the Department of Health, Kinesiology and Sport Studies while mentoring future educators and coaches.
A respected leader within the profession, Floyd previously served on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Assistant Coaches Committee as the Southwestern Athletic Conference representative and has remained active in mentoring student-athletes and young coaches throughout her career.
Floyd earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Public Affairs in 2002 and her Master of Science degree in Health Education from Texas Southern University. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She and her husband, Quantas, a former Texas Southern student-athlete, have a daughter, Alexandrea.
