PINE BLUFF, AR. – The wait is over! The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions football team is set to clash with the Alcorn State Braves in the 36th Southern Heritage Classic on Saturday, September 28, at Simmons Bank Liberty Bowl Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT) and the game will air live on HBCUGO.
This year's matchup will mark the first-ever meeting between the two programs in the Southern Heritage Classic, bringing a fresh storyline to one of the most celebrated HBCU football traditions. Beyond the pageantry, the contest serves as the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opener for both schools, setting the stage for early momentum in league play.
A Battle With Deeper Ties
Adding to the intrigue, Alcorn State Head Coach Cedric Thomas is a UAPB alumni and former Golden Lion football player. His return to face his alma mater in such a high-profile setting underscores the deep connections between the two programs and adds a personal edge to the rivalry. For Coach Hampton, a proud Arkansas native he was a UAPB former assistant coach and mentor to coach Thomas.
"This game means a lot to our university, our alumni, and the city of Memphis," said UAPB Director of Athletics Chris Robinson. "The Southern Heritage Classic is about more than football, it's about showcasing HBCU excellence, celebrating tradition, and providing our student-athletes with a stage that reflects their hard work and dedication."
Golden Lions Enter Riding Momentum
The Golden Lions (1-2) enter the contest fresh off a convincing 34-8 victory over Lincoln (CA) in their home opener. Freshman running back Jaylen Jennings turned in a breakout performance, rushing for 226 yards and four touchdowns to earn SWAC Co-Newcomer of the Week honors. Quarterback Christian Peters added balance with 192 yards through the air, while the UAPB defense stifled the Lincoln offense, forcing multiple turnovers.
Head Coach Alonzo Hampton praised his team's preparation and resilience. "We took a big step forward last week in executing at a high level," Hampton said. "Now, we're focused on carrying that momentum into conference play. Alcorn is a tough, well-coached team, and we know we'll need to play disciplined football for four quarters."
Braves Looking to Rebound
The Braves (1-2) head to Memphis after a challenging 63-0 loss at Mississippi State.
Series History
Though the teams have never met in the Southern Heritage Classic, Saturday's matchup renews a competitive series history. UAPB leads the all-time series 22-20-3, with many contests decided in dramatic fashion. The neutral-site clash in Memphis provides the perfect stage to add another chapter to this historic rivalry.
Classic Atmosphere
The Southern Heritage Classic has long been a showcase for HBCU football, culture, and community, drawing tens of thousands of fans to Memphis annually. Alongside the game, fans enjoy a week filled with concerts, tailgates, and cultural celebrations that highlight the unique spirit of HBCU athletics.
"This is more than just a game—it's a Classic experience," Hampton added. "Our players are excited to compete, and we're proud to represent UAPB on one of the biggest stages in Black college football."
