#UAPBSoftball: Golden Lions Split on Day One at the Capital City Classic

Game 1: Jackson St. 14   UAPB 2

The UAPB Lady Lions got off to a slow start in game one on Saturday, falling to the Jackson State Tigers 14-2 despite the efforts of junior Danika Bryant, who went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

Danika Bryant got the ball to start for UAPB and took the loss.

Offensively, the Lady Lions were paced by Bryant, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0, the Lady Lions first put runs on the board in the third inning. Bryant came across to score the lone run of the inning for UAPB and get them on the board.

The Tigers expanded their lead to 8-1 before the Lady Lions offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the fourth. UAPB pushed across a run on Bryant's two-out RBI double, which brought the score to 8-2 in favor of the Tigers. The Lady Lions were unable to get any closer, as Jackson State added six runs to their tally on the way to a 14-2 final.

Game 2:  UAPB 6    Mississippi Valley St. 3 

Sophomore Kayla Adams was mowing people down on Saturday, fanning 11 Mississippi Valley St. hitters over seven innings of work to help lead the UAPB Lady Lions over the Delta Devilettes 6-3.

In addition to her 11 strikeouts, Adams threw seven innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on seven hits and walking three for UAPB.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lady Lions got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. UAPB got an RBI single from sophomore Janai Mathis, scoring freshman Chasney Cooper from third base.

The Lady Lions lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the fifth trailing 3-1. Freshman Angelina Rivas' bases-clearing triple scored all three runs in the frame for UAPB, which brought the Lady Lions lead to 4-3.

UAPB held Mississippi Valley State scoreless before building their lead to 6-3 in the seventh inning. The Lady Lions drove two runs across on a two-run double from Adams that brought home junior Ariana Gonzalez and Rivas. The score remained 6-3 for the rest of the game, as UAPB held on for the win.
