#UAPBWomensHoops Effort from Allen, Okowi not enough in UAPB's 73-59 loss to Texas Southern

HOUSTON, TX - D'Arrah Allen and Stephanie Okowi combined to score 43 total points, but the Golden Lions fell to the Texas Southern Tigers 73-59 on the road Thursday.

Allen led the Golden Lions with 25 points and two steals. Okowi added 18 points and nine rebounds and Briontanay Marshall chipped in as well with seven points and seven rebounds.

Okowi pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UAPB, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into four second chance points.

The UAPB defense was a problem in Thursday's game, forcing 17 Texas Southern turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Allen's two steals led the way individually for the Golden Lions.

How It Happened

After playing to a 5-5 tie early in the game, UAPB went on a 6-0 run with 6:05 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Allen, to take an 11-5 lead. The Golden Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-12 advantage. UAPB relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 15 points.

The Golden Lions could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 34-28.

Texas Southern continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 49-38 advantage before UAPB went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Okowi, to trim its deficit to 49-43 with 1:21 to go in the third. The Golden Lions continued to reduce the Texas Southern lead, shrinking it to 51-47 by the end of the third quarter. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.

UAPB could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 73-59. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.
