PINE BLUFF, Arkansas -- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff bounced back with two wins during the week over Philander Smith University in a two-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday.
GAME 1
UAPB got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Golden Lions put 16 runs on the board and take down the Philander Smith Panthers 16-5 Tuesday.
Chris Bedgood (1-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for UAPB (8-8). The right-hander went four innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on one hit, allowing two walks and striking out five.
Offensively, the Golden Lions were paced by Carlos Rodriguez, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run, a walk and three RBI. Donavan Noble furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and three RBI. Trinidad DeLaGarza also chipped in for UAPB, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a home run and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Golden Lions first put runs on the board in the first inning. UAPB's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Rodriguez.
The Golden Lions then held the Panthers scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. UAPB scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Edwin DeLaCruz, which brought the Golden Lions lead to 6-2.
UAPB kept Philander Smith without a run before building their lead to 8-2 in the fourth inning. The Golden Lions recorded two runs off of Philander Smith pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Noble.
UAPB held the Panthers without a run before their offense got back in action the next inning. The Golden Lions scored twice on DeLaGarza's two-run homer, bringing the UAPB advantage to 10-2.
Philander Smith got within 10-3 until the Golden Lions scored again in the sixth inning to stretch its lead to 16-3. The UAPB offense piled up six runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Noble and a two-run double from Brandon Simon. Philander Smith put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Golden Lions still coasted to the 16-5 win.

GAME 2
DeLaGarza and DeLaCruz each collected two extra base hits to help lead the UAPB Golden Lions over the Philander Smith Panthers 17-7 on Wednesday.
Jaxson Lucas (3-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for UAPB (9-8). The right-hander went 1.1 shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing no walks and striking out one. Jordan Jones also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Lions, throwing two innings, giving up one run on one hit, with no walks and two strikeouts.
DeLaGarza's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-4 day, and included two doubles and four RBI. DeLaCruz made his contribution with two doubles and an RBI, part of a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Ben VanMaanen also chipped in for the Golden Lions, putting together three hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Golden Lions first put runs on the board in the second inning. Donavan Noble's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for UAPB.
The Panthers broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the third inning, when the Golden Lions got back on the scoreboard. UAPB pushed across a run on DeLaCruz's one-out RBI double, which tightened the Panthers lead to 6-3.
UAPB held the Panthers off the board before rallying to snatch a 12-6 lead in the fourth. The Golden Lions bats heated up in the inning, scoring nine runs, including a two-run double off the bat of DeLaGarza.
UAPB held the Panthers scoreless before their offense got in gear the next inning. The Golden Lions scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of VanMaanen, bringing the UAPB advantage to 16-6.
Philander Smith got within 16-7 until the Golden Lions scored again in the seventh inning to enforce the mercy rule 17-7 after they walked-off on an RBI single off the bat of Jose Rubalcava for the win.
