PRAIRIE VIEW, TX - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team held Prairie View A&M to just 9.1 percent from beyond the arc in a 1-for-11 shooting performance on the way to a 77-48 win over the Panthers on the road Monday.
The Golden Lions (12-10, 7-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Zaay Green, who had 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and six steals. Coriah Beck tacked on 17 points and Maya Peat chipped in as well with 10 points and three blocks.
UAPB pulled down 37 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Prairie View A&M's 32, led by Green's six boards.
UAPB's defense held Prairie View A&M to only 9.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 21.8 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 2-1, UAPB went on a 5-0 run with 9:02 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Beck, to take a 6-2 lead. The Golden Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 11-10 advantage. UAPB capitalized on five Prairie View A&M turnovers in the period, turning them into four points on the other end of the floor.
UAPB built that first quarter lead to 15-12 before going on a 13-0 run starting at the 7:46 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Green, to increase its lead to 28-12, a score that would hold until halftime. UAPB dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 17 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, UAPB continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 38-18 before going on a 9-0 run to expand its lead further to 47-18 with 6:18 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Panthers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Golden Lions still entered the fourth quarter with a 57-30 edge. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 18 of its 29 points in the paint.
UAPB kept widening that lead, expanding it to 63-35 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Green's layup, to grow the lead to 69-35 with 4:11 to go in the contest. The Panthers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Golden Lions still cruised the rest of the way for the 77-48 win. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint.
