#UAPBSoftball Splits With Western Illinois At Home

GAME 1 | UAPB 3, Western Illinois 2

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas --It was a closely contested match-up, but UAPB's one-run fifth inning proved to be the difference, as the Lady Lions emerged victorious on Saturday, taking down the Western Illinois Leathernecks 3-2.

Freshman Kayla Adams started in the circle and picked up the win for UAPB. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on nine hits, allowing two walks and striking out four.

At the plate, the Lady Lions were led by senior Samaria Jackson, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a double, a walk and an RBI. Senior Shalin Charles furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lady Lions put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the fourth inning. Charles' run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for UAPB.

The Leathernecks then tied the ballgame at two before the Lady Lions came back to reclaim their advantage in the fifth inning. UAPB pushed across a run on Jackson's two-out RBI double, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Lady Lions. The score remained 3-2 for the rest of the game, as UAPB held on for the win.

GAME NOTES

» UAPB's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed two runs across.
» Sophomore Justice Walton stole two bases in Saturday's game.
» UAPB pitchers faced 31 Western Illinois hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out four.

GAME 2 | Western Illinois 9, UAPB 5

PINE BLUFF, Arkansas --Junior Amari Broughton recorded two extra base hits, but the UAPB Lady Lions fell to the Western Illinois Leathernecks 9-5 Sunday.

Freshman Heidi Price started and took the loss in the circle for UAPB.

Broughton's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-3 day, and included two doubles, a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Naiyestlie Ware furnished a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Jasmine Carlson also contributed for the Lady Lions, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lady Lions were trailing 9-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. UAPB's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Ware.

The Lady Lions kept the Leathernecks off the board before narrowing the gap further in the sixth. Sophomore Jada Carhee came across to score the lone run of the inning for UAPB, which tightened the Leathernecks lead to 9-5. The Lady Lions were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME NOTES

» UAPB's power output was led by Broughton, who compiled two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» UAPB's highest scoring inning was the fifth, when it pushed four runs across.
» UAPB pitchers faced 41 Western Illinois hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and 10 fly balls while striking out three.
» The Lady Lions drew five walks from Western Illinois pitching.
» Broughton led the Lady Lions at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.

With the series tied at 1-1, the Golden Lions will be back in action, Monday, Feb. 19, for game three.  First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
