DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team went into the half beating Bethune-Cookman 26-25, but could not pull away in the second half and fell 63-61 to the Lady Wildcats on the road Monday.
The Lady Lions had two players score in double figures, led by Coriah Beck, who had 16 points and two steals. Tia Morgan tacked on 15 points off the bench and Jelissa Reese added eight points and two steals.
Maori Davenport pulled down two offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for UAPB, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.
The UAPB defense held Bethune-Cookman shooters to just 34 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 11-9, UAPB went on a 5-0 run with 2:38 left in the first quarter to take a 14-11 lead. The Lady Lions then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-14 advantage. UAPB got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for four of its 16 total points.
Bethune-Cookman fought back to tie the game at 16-16 before UAPB went on a 5-0 run starting at the 7:47 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Demetria Shephard, to take a 21-16 lead. The Lady Wildcats cut into that lead, but the Lady Lions still enjoyed a 26-25 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 10 points.
Bethune-Cookman then took a 37-31 lead following intermission before UAPB went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 37-36 with 1:45 to go in the third. Bethune-Cookman countered and stretched its lead to 43-38 heading into the fourth. UAPB took advantage of five Bethune-Cookman turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.
UAPB came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 7-0 run to seize a 45-43 lead with 7:56 to go in the contest. Bethune-Cookman re-asserted control, outscoring the Lady Lions 20-16 the rest of the way to hand UAPB the 63-61 loss. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 23 points in the paint.
