BOCA RATON, FL -- Laila Fortson collected 11 kills with a .688 hitting percentage to help propel the UAPB volleyball team to a four-set win (18-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-7) against the Alcorn State Lady Braves Friday at Abessinio Court at FAU Arena.
The non-conference win improved the Lady Lions' overall record to 2-5 on the season.
The Lady Lions offense was paced by Fernanda Spengler, who finished with 11 kills on the day, and by Fortson, who had 11 while hitting .688. UAPB got 18 digs from Breana August to lead them defensively.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Lady Lions fell behind early, losing a tough first set 25-18. UAPB trailed by as many as nine points as Alcorn State grabbed the advantage for good at 10-9 in a set that was tied up two times before the Lady Braves took control.
SET 2 | UAPB evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 second-set win. The Lady Lions survived a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured six lead changes and was tied 10 times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way. The UAPB offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.
SET 3 | UAPB grabbed a 2-1 match lead after defeating the Lady Braves in the third set. The Lady Lions won the set 25-20 propelled by a strong showing on the attacking side. UAPB put together a .308 attack percentage with 11 kills in the set win. The Lady Lions ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza. The UAPB offense also got a boost from five aces in the stanza.
SET 4 | UAPB closed out the match with a 25-7 fourth-set victory, winning their third straight set. The Lady Lions scored first and never trailed in the set to secure the victory. UAPB finished up the stanza on a strong note, claiming its biggest lead, 18 points, to finish off the set. UAPB also supplemented their offense with three aces in the set. UAPB got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Alcorn State attacks in the stanza.
