The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's basketball team is set for what is expected to be a historical season opener.
The Lady Lions will host the Arkansas Razorbacks on Monday night for the first time in school history.
UAPB head coach Dawn Thornton enters her fourth season with the Lady Lions, and is excited for their matchup with Arkansas.
"Being able to host the Razorbacks is monumental for our program, and the city of Pine Bluff" Thornton said about the upcoming game. "It definitely shows the growth from what it was when I started back in 2019. I believe it's deserving for Pine Bluff to be able to have this moment."
A season ago, the Lady Lions had a historic non-conference season, defeating Southern Miss, Southeast Missouri State, and Tulane. With Arkansas coming to town, the Lady Lions expect to set the tone a little different this time.
"We've talked all week during bonding about believing in ourselves," said coach Thornton. "We talked about having confidence to do what it takes to come out on top. Overall though, we're just thankful for this opportunity to even host the Razorbacks in our gym, and play the game of basketball."
Tip-off begins at 6 p.m. central time at H.O. Clemmons Arena.
