#UAPBWomensHoops Defensive Stand Lifts Lady Lions Over Bethune Cookman

PINE BLUFF, AR -- Maya Peat grabbed 10 rebounds and Khadijah Brown added 10 more, and the UAPB women's basketball team beat the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats 73-56 at home Monday.

Peat and Brown's fantastic rebounding performances led the Lady Lions (8-8, 4-2 SWAC) in the contest. Peat tacked on four points and Brown added 12 points, two steals, and six blocks. Sade Hudson also helped out with 14 points and five steals.

Led by Peat's four offensive rebounds, UAPB did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.

UAPB's defense held Bethune-Cookman to only 37.3 percent shooting from the field.

Head coach Dawn Thornton was pleased with the win, but it was the defensive performance that really set the tone for the Lady Lions victory on Monday night.

"We're capable of scoring points, but we also have to make stops," Thornton said. "It doesn't matter how many shots go in for you, the defense has to come up with some stops to have a chance at winning. Khadijah loves to impact a shot with a block. She had six blocks tonight, and I was very pleased with her effort to lead this team, defensively."

How It Happened

After falling behind 5-2, UAPB went on a 5-0 run with 3:47 left in the first quarter to take a 7-5 lead. The Lady Lions then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 11-9.

Bethune-Cookman kept adding to that lead, building a 22-15 advantage before UAPB went on an 11-0 run, highlighted by a three from Takaylyn Busby, to take a 26-22 lead. The Lady Lions proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 33-26 advantage heading into halftime. UAPB forced seven Bethune-Cookman turnovers in the period and turned them into 10 points.

UAPB wasted no time building on its lead, going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Peat, to expand its lead further to 41-26 with 7:15 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lady Wildcats had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Lions still entered the fourth quarter with a 50-40 edge. UAPB played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.

UAPB kept its lead intact before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Joyce Kennerson's jumper, to grow the lead to 71-51 with 2:11 to go in the contest. The Lady Wildcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Lions still cruised the rest of the way for the 73-56 win. UAPB took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 23 points in the paint.
