Pine Bluff, Ark.- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's and women's track and field program splits up on the road this weekend at two different meets. Most of the Golden Lions and Lady Lions will compete in the Al Schmidt Bulldogs Relays in Starkville, MS. on Friday, March 24-26. A group of student-athletes will also travel to Austin, Texas, on March 26-27 in the Texas Relays.
Both squads opened the season strong at the Richard Martin Jr. Invitational hosted by Central Arkansas last weekend as the men's placed second and the women's placed third overall.
On the women's side, Junior Safiya John the SWAC Conference record holder in the heptathlon, will be competing in seven events in the women's heptathlon at the Texas Relays.
"My goal for Safiya is to continue to grow stronger and score enough points for nationals," said UAPB head Coach Christopher McCoy.
The rest of both squads will be on the road competing Friday in Starkville, MS, at Mississippi State University. The Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays takes place at the Mike Sanders Track Complex beginning at 10 a.m. Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday, starting with field events on both days.
"The goal is to always get better as we advance through the season, "said Coach McCoy. "I'm expecting to see more improvement as we compete in Mississippi."
